After the Storm:

• Once you have received the okay to return home; inspect your home for damage and loss.  Call your insurance agent right away! They will need to come out and assess the damage and the sooner, the better.

• It is important to take multiple pictures before you begin to clean or make repairs to your home.  Make a list of all your damaged property; including the serial numbers of any valuable electronics and the retail price and age of the item.  This is an easy way for your claims adjuster to know exactly what kind of monetary loss you’ve suffered.

o Also, you should never throw anything away until the adjuster has had time to inspect and appraise identifiable
                belongings.

• It is imperative to fill out the forms that will be sent to you by your insurance agency. “Proof of Loss” forms are not to be taken lightly.  Upon arrival, fill them out and send them to your insurance agency as soon as possible.  In addition, you should also make copies of the completed forms and keep them for your records.

• Save your receipts!  If your home is damaged to the point where it is unlivable, you may need to make temporary living arrangements. Even if you have the opportunity to stay with relatives or fiends, living expenses can still add up.  Make sure you save all receipts from the period of time when you are out of a home.  Anything from food expenses to the cost of storage may be reimbursed by your insurance agency.  Most insurance companies will advance you the money to cover such costs.
