3 Steps to Complete before a Natural Disaster Strikes

3 Steps to Complete Before a Natural Disaster Strikes

When a natural disaster strikes it is necessary for you and your family to be prepared. Therefore, it is crucial to have a plan for what to do before, during and after a natural disaster.

1.) Have a Plan! Make sure you and your family makes a plan for what to do if a natural disaster strikes. Meaning, predetermine a place you and your family can evacuate to or meet at, that you know is safe and secure.

For example, if a hurricane strikes your family should be aware of a safety zone where the elevation is high enough to make the area safe.

2.) Have an Emergency Kit! Your Emergency Kit should have the essentials your family will need in case of a disaster. Prepare your emergency kit before a natural disaster strikes because you may have only have a moments notice and will not have the time to search for needed supplies.

Your Emergency Kit Should Include:
  •  Essentials you and your family will need for a minimum of 72 hours.
  •  Non-perishable food
  •  Water
    • (1 gallon of water/person/day)
  •  Flash light and batteries
  •  Emergency contact list
  •  First Aid Kit
  •  Cell Phone and charger
  •  Personal Hygiene items, including any medicines
  •  Battery Powered Radio to stay informed

Maintain Your Emergency Kit: It is important to replenish perishable food items with fresh.
In addition, make sure each member of your family knows where the Emergency Kit is kept.

3.) Stay Informed! It is crucial that you stay informed of the latest news. Familiarize yourself with your local shelter and evacuation routes. Be well-versed in the different hazardous situations and needed safety precautions to ensure the well-being of your family, as well as others, in the surrounding community.
